How much?

Hello Soapers,

Now that we have gone over the when, why and what in the previous posts. Let’s talk about the how. How much of each ingredient to use.

When making soap, you must know the exact amount of water and lye (sodium hydroxide) to use for the amount and types of oil that you are using. This is very important. If the amount are not accurate you run the risk of making soap the cannot be used.

In order to find out the correct amount of water and lye you must use to make your soap. You will need to use what is know as a soaping calculator. With the calculator you enter the type and amount of oils and butters you are using and it calculates the amount of lye and water needed to make your soap.

There are tons of soaping calculators on the web. You can simply do a search for them. I personally prefer to use www.soapcalc.net. I find that it simple and easy to use.

You can use the soaping calculator to play around with different oil combinations to see what qualities your soap will have. You can see if your soap will be bubbly, creamy or moisturizing.

Thank you,

Monica
