Cold Process vs. Hot Process Soap Making

Hello Soapers,

Now that we have decided to make soap. We know what equipment we need. Let’s talk about the methods used to make soap. There are a few methods to make soap but I am going to focus on cold process and hot process. I will focus on these two methods because they are the two methods that I use.

Both methods achive the same outcome if done correctly. That is make soap.

The initial process is the same except with hot process you will need a heating source (i.e. crackpot, stainless steel pot, hot plate or stove top.

Let’s start with hot process soap making. What is it? Hot process soap making uses heat to force the soaponification process. Using a controlled temperature that speeds up soaponification process.  Hot process somewhat eliminates the curing time. With hot process the soap can be used immediately.  Although allowing your soap to cure makes for a harder, longer lasting bar of soap

Cold Process soap making does involve some heat. However, that heat will occur naturally whrn the sodium hydroxide and water are combined. The initial steps between hot process and cold process are the same except you will not force soaponification with additional heat. The cold process soap is allowed to cure for at least 6 – 8 weeks to allow it to hardened and to be able to use it.

Which method you use, will be entirely up to you.

I have given you a very basic explanation of hot process and cold process soap making. If you need an in depth explanation you can just do a search for these two methods on the internet.

Thanks,

Monica
